Bloom Where You Are Planted
OUR JOURNEY
As a small child, I would continuously be found in the garden digging in the dirt, finding other ways to grow flowers and vegetables alongside the elders in my family. I didn't realize it at the time but this would stem into a full love of horticulture.
Fast forward to 2007, when I met the love of my life at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. I was studying Horticulture - Business and Lucas was studying Grazing Livestock Management. We quickly became friends which allowed us to enjoy each others loves and quirks. Little did we know we both loved nature and conservation of the land. And.... to be honest getting to marry your best friend is everything and more.
We got married in the fall of 2015 and moved to the beautiful Sandhills of North Central Nebraska, where Lucas grew up. By 2021 we expanded our family to have Alaina, Archer, and Rhen. During this time of motherhood, I lost my way and battled with postpartum depression and anxiety. We also lost our first son Cooper, at 4 months of age, who suffered from a congential heart condition and a diaphragmatic hernia. These conditions were unknown to us at the time. After seeking help from doctors, family, and friends, I leaned on Lucas and my passion for horticulture and decided to "bloom where I was planted".
In the fall of 2021, I purchased our first dahlia tubers and a few seed packets. Previous years of garden supply "collecting" left me with a large supply of seed starting trays and pots to get started. My first raised beds went in February 2022, thanks to a very mild Nebraska winter. To say we were ready for what was to come is an understament. Once flowers were ready for harvest, customers were flooding us with requests for our prairie inspired bouquets. The community was in love.
We started delivering cut flower bouquet subscriptions to customers and secured pick-up locations at Palmer Embroidery & Boutique in Ainsworth, NE and The Porch in Bassett, NE.
So, where does "prairie" fit into all of this? Many of the wildflowers that are right outside your back door can be used in a bouquet. From the butterfly weed, yarrow, to goldenrod, many of these blooms have an excellent vase life and are used in many of our bouquets. Check out our Sandhills Wildflower page to learn more about which flowers we forage for in your cut flower bouquets.
We quickly have realized that the need for a local cut flower farm in North Central Nebraska is in demand. In 2023 we are looking to expand our growing space to include 15 more beds to keep up with the need for fresh cut flower bouquets.
At Prairieland Flowers, we’re proud to provide our customers with locally grown cut flowers. We encourge the use of sustainable farming practices whenever possible for the longevity of our world and safety of your family. We are so happy to have you here in our little corner of God's country to experience all we have to offer.
